FAQs

General Tiling & Project Planning

Timeframes depend on the size of the area and the type of work involved. A small splashback may take a day or two, while a full bathroom including waterproofing can take one to two weeks. You will be given a clear timeframe before work begins.

Surfaces should be clean, dry and stable. Removing old tiles or fixtures beforehand can help reduce time and cost, although preparation can be handled as part of the job if required. This will be discussed during the quote.

It is recommended to order an extra 10 to 15 percent to allow for cuts, waste and any future repairs. Always check that all boxes are from the same batch number to avoid shade variation.

Rectified tiles have edges that are machine cut to be perfectly straight. This allows for narrower grout lines and a cleaner, more modern finish.

With long or large format tiles, a one third offset pattern is often recommended instead of a 50 percent brick pattern. This helps reduce lippage, which is when tile edges sit slightly uneven.

Preparation & Waterproofing

Yes. Waterproofing is required in wet areas such as showers, bathrooms and laundries. It protects the structure of your home from water damage and must be completed to Australian Standards.

In some situations, it is possible if the existing tiles are solid and level. However, removing old tiles is usually the better long-term option and prevents issues with floor height and adhesion.

Natural stone tiles such as marble and travertine require sealing to protect against staining. Some grout types also benefit from sealing to extend their lifespan and make cleaning easier.

Grout & Finishing

Grout fills the gaps between tiles. Silicone is used in corners and where surfaces meet, such as wall to floor joints. Silicone allows for slight movement and helps prevent cracking.

A grout colour close to the tile creates a softer, more seamless look. A contrasting grout will highlight the tile shape and pattern. Advice can be provided to suit your space and style.

Quotes & Costs

Quotes typically include labour, adhesive and grout. Waterproofing materials are included where required. Tiles are usually supplied by the client unless otherwise arranged.

Large format tiles, mosaics, natural stone and complex patterns require more time, precision and cutting. Surface preparation can also affect the overall cost.

Yes. MDR Tiling is fully licensed 10660C and insured and works in accordance with Australian Standards, including AS 3958 for ceramic tiling.

Maintenance

Use a pH neutral cleaner and avoid harsh or acidic products, as they can damage grout and natural stone over time.

It is recommended to keep spare tiles from the original batch for future repairs. Tile colours and batches can change over time, so having extras on hand makes matching easier.
